Wind Dixie Reno Part 2

I absolutely love our house! It is literally my dream house...ask anyone. I always said I would marry a dairy farmer and live in a big yellow farm house with a white fence. I got the dairy farmer and house, but I'm still working on that fence:) Our house was built around 1885 so it has needed a little TLC in the past few years:) My in-laws updated a few major things in the house while they lived here. But since they moved, there has been renters and no one has ever put real hard core love into since then. So that is what we have been trying to do for the past 10 years:)

Before we got married we:
Added new flooring in our kitchen
Added new flooring in our laundry room
New big picture window in living room

Since being married we have added:
New carpet upstairs in hallway, our bedroom and Tenlee's room
New windows in the nursery (our room now)
New window in Tenlee's room

Tyler redid our bathroom a few years before we got married so that was one thing that was pretty up to date, except for the new windows.

Almost two years ago we painted our kitchen cabinets, got a "new to us" vanity/sink for our bathroom (which then got repainted) and replaced 3 of our downstairs doors.

When we first got married we added an outside wood burner because we knew to heat our entire house in the winter would cost us a fortune. Well that has been great so far...free heat! But it takes A LOT of wood to heat our house each winter. Last year Tyler was so ready to be done with winter with the amount of wood he had to cut, or if he ran out of time, wood he paid someone for. And last year was such a mild winter. We have always toyed with the idea of re insulating and putting in new windows for our house but was never serious about it  Well this year we decided the timing was right to go ahead and do it. So our newest projects are:
  • Basically gutting our dining room, living room, playroom and both kids rooms upstairs
  • Since we will be making a complete mess we will be replacing the flooring in our kitchen, dining room for sure and possibly putting carpet in the living room if our budget allows. (For those of you who have seen our carpet knows it really needs replaced so I am hoping we can stay under budget so we can go ahead and replace it)
  • Putting in 10 new windows
  • New front door
  • And then since the walls will be torn down I will have to repaint 5 rooms
  • We have wood wainscoting on our walls so depending how easy that comes off, it may have to replaced...hoping to keep it!
  • Replacing our side porch which was literally falling down into small pieces
Kitchen
The only new thing is the flooring. The counter tops were replaced
about 6 years ago and I repainted the cabinets 2 years ago.

 Dining Room
This is one room of our house that I have never loved...I have never gotten the color on the wall that I love, and we knew at some point we would want to take out the "hat" on the wall (from the wood burner years ago) and remove the "platform".

 "Hat" on wall gone-CHECK
"Platform" gone-CHECK
This is the color scheme I am trying to do for the kitchen/dining room. Our kitchen is painted in the lighter purple so I wanted something to accent and we both loved the grayish blue color to the right of the purple.
This was the main part of the reno that made me go crazy! Living
in one tiny main space with everything we use in there.
This is one room that I have always hated and it has bothered me knowing that it is the first
room you walk into. Now I absolutely love walking into our house. To me it turned out perfect!!

Love my new signs that my sis in law made for us!
We originally had two extremely old 2x4 shelves with nasty coat hangers on this spot and it was nice being to put coats on the there as soon as we walked in but it also got too disorganized. I love this cubical that we brought from downstairs to use for our bags, keys and it is great having the diffuser right there as we walk in and out!
Living Room
Before of the TV wall
We both love how this wall turned out! Finding the perfect stain was so hard and it took
me longer to pick the stain out then it did to actually stain the boards once they were up!
Living Room
Before of the whole room
So happy to see this carpet go!!! We originally had planned on trying to keep the carpet to help with the budget, but then we decided it was in rough enough shape and while everything was already moved out of there we might as well go ahead and put new carpet down. We got an excellent price on and LOVE the color we picked out. I am so glad we decided to go with new carpet. It is so nice to finally have clean carpet!!
This was the archway and in order to re drywall the wall we had to take down parts of it. So we decided instead of keeping it the same we would change it up and stain it to match the "shiplap" wall.
To be honest, when I first saw it after he had it all done, I wasn't a fan! I wanted something plain and simple and this was a little more fancy. But after we stained it the same color as the "shiplap" wall, I absolutely love it! I also really love that Tyler designed it and it is something special..corny I know:)
Before Playroom/School Area
The color was a tan color and it just wasn't as organized as I would have liked!
Before School Area
We had a space in the playroom for school, but we ended up just doing it in the dining room. So when we gutted the playroom I wanted to get an actual table and organized area to do our schooling in, cuz in all honestly I am HORRIBLE at keeping it organized and it is nice to leave everything in the playroom and be able to still use our dinner table
After (playroom/school room)
I absolutely LOVE the color we picked! It brightened up the room so much and I love our little school area. The closet is the perfect area for our dresser that holds school supplies, craft supplies and some of the kids toys. Tyler found this old table at an antique store and I love that I can make it bigger or smaller according to doing or not doing school.
I love this little spot on the wall for their art projects. Its another spot that has added color and I love seeing their work on the wall from the living room. The boys even know that their creations can go up there:) I also painted the built in bookshelf, which was an old scratched up oak color.
I also love how this wall turned out! And the kids have
been great about putting their toys away in their own crates.
Laundry Room
This has always been my "salon" area since moving in, and then our washer and dryer is back there as well as the door to our lovely mud room. This past year we decided to take out my hair equipment. We added a big storage dresser to help with storage in that area. It has become an area that we just basically use a catch all space and then try to fit back there to do our laundry. And because this area opens into our kitchen there is no way to "hide" the mess. So we decided to repaint (left over paint from remodel) and get new flooring. Our old sticky tiles that Tyler put in 10 years ago are starting to peal apart. We then just reorganized and added a few decorations and we finally have a decent looking laundry room:)
Before
After...such a huge difference! I love walking into do laundry now:)
Before
(A MESS!!!)
After
SO MUCH BETTER!
I love having this dresser for storage. It is great for extra laundry supplies and Tyler keeps everyday tools in the right side and I am still able to keep my hair supplies on the left side. Its all hidden but yet accessible. I also love how the rack is much longer so we can fit everyone's light/heavy jackets up and they are super easy to find!
Tenlee's Room
 BEFORE
 After
This room was so much fun decorating. Tenlee had fun picking out her new comforter on her own and it fits her perfectly! Her Aunt Janelle made her sign and my mom got her the horse canvas for her birthday. And we were able to convince to let us get her a chandelier. A perfect big girls room:)
I love how this wall turned out!
The boys room
Their 2 outside walls got gutted so we just repainted them and used
the same theme and decorations. But I love how their room turned out! ( I still need to repaint their window trim and finish the top of the wall to ceiling, but I am waiting till it is warmer and I can air out their room while doing it)

For some reason we never took a picture of the side porch before, but you can see the red porch on the ground in front and let's just say it was in bad shape! Our family was starting to get nervous walking on it!
We still need to stain the under boards but that will wait till it gets
a tad warmer out:) But we absolutely love how this turned out!

This has been a long year of remodeling and it feels so good to have it all done! I love looking back on all of these pictures and remembering so many fun memories that we made together making our home so absolutely perfect!
